A few of my friends have been sweetly and generously encouraging me to the “reality” that America is not dead. These are people I care deeply for, but I completely disagree with them.
The truth is that this country, as we’ve known it since the days of the Pilgrims, exhaled its last breath on November 6, 2012. If you cannot see that, then it’s probably true that you don’t consider The Bible to be true, the Inspired Word of God. Because that book begins with a very familiar (I hope) story that involves just the kind of death I’m talking about.
Remember the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, and the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden? Those were the only two trees from which God forbade Adam and Eve to eat. Why? Because if they ate from them, they would surely die. But after they ate from the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, they were still alive for hundreds of years. So, did they really die from eating that forbidden fruit?
Yes. They died, not once, but twice. The first death was the instantaneous death of the sinless spirit that God had put in them when He created them and breathed life into them. The second was their bodily death, which took much longer because they had been perfectly made in bodies that were supposed to last forever. But the moment sin entered into them, the corruption began until it finally put them in their graves.
Like Adam and Eve this nation was blessed by God from its inception. By the 1600’s, all of Western Civilization had been shaped by the very strong Judeo-Christian ethic that has been transformational from the time of Jesus. Christians from European countries were the first foreigners to land on the shores of this continent, settle it, and devote it to The Lord. Their faith permeated every aspect of their lives, so it’s no surprise that the new nation was built with much attribution to The Creator, God Almighty. The very first book to be published by the new nation was the Bible. And it was the new government itself that commissioned it to be printed, at government expense, expressly to be handed out to the citizens and schools of that day in order that they might teach the children how to grow up to be good and Godly citizens.
While this country was officially “born” at about the time of the Age of Reason, the Judeo-Christian ethic was predominant within. We obviously weren’t a perfect union, but God’s blessings were still on us. However(imho), the seeds (ideas) that resulted in the deadly harvest that we saw on Nov. 6, 2012, were produced between the late 1800’s and the 1960’s. The watering and tending of those seeds began in the ‘60’s and have culminated in a culture that is the complete opposite of the republic that was formed by the founders of this nation. Now the Spirit with which God blessed this nation has been removed. That is so obvious that it’s hard for me to understand how people can NOT see this.
It’s just a matter of time before we reap the “physical” death, as a nation. But it is coming, folks. The oppressive policies against the freedom of Life should be the most obvious for anyone to see. Since 1972 we have been allowing, by law, the unGodly shedding of innocent blood to the tune of more than 55,000,000 babies! And as far as our freedom of Religion is concerned? Well, within days or weeks we will see an increase in the government oppression of Christians and Christian organizations over things related to Obamacare mandates that require everyone to pay for abortion, abortifacients, etc., regardless of our religious consciences. The issue of gay marriage is another issue that assuredly will result in oppression of Christians. It’s already happening, so with this last election, the “winners” have become hardened, and now emboldened to do more against us than they have done up to now.
The real HOPE AND CHANGE that this country needs is Jesus. May His people fall on their faces and petition Him for the healing of this nation!
I believe that we have witnessed the last days of what was once a great country. We see this because we have finally reached the point where those who value celebrity and entitlements more than Truth or good character outnumber those who are responsible and productive citizens. Without a doubt, this is the full bloom of the post-Christian era, in the last stronghold of the Christianity-shaped Western world. The majority in this country has made us slaves in our own Babylon overnight.
While this could be the foundation on which Christians might feel defeated, I want to encourage the Bride of the King of Kings. Jesus is the same, yesterday, today, and forever. Jesus is with you, and He WILL NOT leave you. Jesus is your HOPE, the OBJECT of your affection, your KING…
Hebrews 10: 1-12 ESV
“You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning,
and the heavens are the work of your hands;
11they will perish, but you remain;
they will all wear out like a garment,
12like a robe you will roll them up,
like a garment they will be changed.#
But you are the same,
and your years will have no end.”
He has not abandoned His people, nor will He. And only Christians have the assurance of the following:
ik Romans 8:28 ESV
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good,[a] for those who are called according to his purpose.”
Right now it looks to me as though He has decided to give the rebellious (those who rebel against Him) over to Satan. Let them satisfy all their fleshly passions and appetites. They are not doing that in a vacuum.
But WE need to continue to follow Him, pursue HIS approval and NOT the approval of any man (or woman…for those who need to hear this). We need to continue to stand for what is RIGHT, not what has been “approved by a vote.” We need to continue to speak out and fight for the rights of the the weak, the unborn, the infirm, the suicidal, the poor, the real widows and orphans! And we need to do all this out of our love for HIM, not for the desire to be written up in our local newspapers so that all may see how “Christian” we really are!
There are several bright spots in this. The biggest one is that as people are more and more oppressed, revival tends to break out, folks. So I am looking to The Lord and the coming REVIVAL! God’s got ALL the evil covered!
Titus 2:11-15 ESV
11For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.
15Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.
Matthew 5:21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.” ESV (Red letter Jesus words.)
I know I said my next post would be on this coming Sunday, and that it would be about the book, “Why You Think The Way You Do,” but I’m making a change here. I will post on the book on Sunday.
However, I’ve been praying about the political noise which we hear and in which we participate. It is easy, for me at least, to get angry at those who so vigorously boo at God and who treat Christians as though we couldn’t possibly have a brain. It’s easy, for me again, to want to call them “fools” and “idiots” and wish we could all just have our own separate countries and governments so that we wouldn’t get on each others’ nerves.
But that’s not what The Lord wants from, or for, us. And it isn’t realistic, of course.
But I ask you to consider what God really wants from us. Think about it. God put us IN the world. Why? Well, I firmly believe that He wants us here, in part, to rescue as many as we can from the flames of hell. God loves “fools” and “idiots,” and He does not want any to perish. We are here to redeem others, this culture, and this world, for HIM.
This morning as I read Mark 5, the words above grabbed me. God lets us see The Truth, He gives us discernment, He takes away the scales from our eyes, and He wants others to have those gifts, too. We might want to bring coals on their heads, but we see that as punishing them. God sees the coals as purifying those we see as our “enemy.”
Think about it. When we look at current political things with an eye that is a little more God-centered, can we see the great love He has for the Lost? Can we see that the answer is not to want to separate from the unpleasantness…but rather to submit to The Lord’s Call to engage our culture and the people in it, to redeem and restore as many as possible before He returns.
Even if we are persecuted?
“They will know we are Christians by our love.”
